India has no influence over Chagos issue: Spokesperson Miuvaan Mohamed

The government has denied allegations over of reports that the government's stand on the issue was abruptly changed due to Indian interference in the case.

Speaking at a news conference held at the President's Office, Spokesperson Miuvaan Mohamed responding to journalist question stated that Maldives view on the ownership was not change due to interference of any country. 

"There is no interference from any country. There is no influence from any country other and even from India. This is the country's own stand," .

After Mauritius approached the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) over the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) case between The Maldives and Chagos, the Maldives has been advocating that Chagos is British-owned territory and therefore Mauritius cannot be prosecuted in the case. But last year, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Britain's detention of Chagos was a violation of international law and declared it a part of Mauritius.

Maldives decided to change their stand of the Chargos as a British territory after last Thursday's hearing and had decided to back Mauritius in the matter, Despite the ruling by ruling. 

The government has come under severe criticism over the issue.

The Former attorney general, who has studied in the maritime sector and had earlier played a key role in advising the government on the Maldives. Dr Mohammad Munawwar said India would benefit from changing its stand on The Mauritius issue.

Addressing a news conference on the issue, Dr Mohammad Munawwar stated Mauritius enjoys close ties with India and a large part of the country's population is Indian. He said India would be burdened with getting The Chagos Island for Mauritius as part of that close relationship.

Dr Munawwar also stated that India has enforce their power in Hanimaadhoo, North Thilafalhu and Addu City. He stated that India would want to grab Addu City next. 

They [India] want the south of Addu Atoll. To the south is Chagos. Once it was given to Mauritius, they gained control over the Indian Ocean
