Maldives–UK strengthen bilateral ties with high-level discussions in London
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, currently undertaking an official visit to the United Kingdom, met today with The Right Honourable Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP, Speaker of the House of Commons, at the Speaker’s House within the Palace of Westminster for a high-level diplomatic engagement.
The courtesy call marked a significant moment in the ongoing diplomatic engagement between the Maldives and the United Kingdom.
Discussions between President Dr. Muizzu and Speaker Hoyle centred on deepening collaboration across shared priorities, including environmental stewardship, sustainable tourism, the fisheries sector, and the advancement of democratic governance.
Following the meeting, President Dr. Muizzu signed the official Guestbook and was given a guided tour of the historic Palace of Westminster, underscoring the spirit of goodwill and mutual respect between the two countries.
The President’s visit to the UK is part of a broader diplomatic mission that includes a series of high-level meetings and engagements.
Accompanied by a senior delegation, the President aims to enhance bilateral cooperation in governance, climate action, trade, investment, and education.
He is also scheduled to participate in a business forum in London, focused on strengthening commercial and investment ties between the two nations.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the United Kingdom, established on July 26, 1965.
The President’s visit comes at a symbolic time, reinforcing the long-standing partnership built on mutual trust, shared democratic values, and a commitment to sustainable development.
The engagements are expected to open new avenues of cooperation and reaffirm both nations’ intent to further consolidate their diplomatic and economic relationship.
