Maldives and UK commit to enhanced collaboration across key sectors
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu participated in a high-level engagement with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the Maldives, held today at the House of Lords, to strengthen the longstanding partnership between the Maldives and the United Kingdom as well as a meeting with the UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
The discussion with AAPG reflected on over six decades of diplomatic ties between the two nations and explored opportunities to enhance cooperation across key sectors.
The meeting opened with remarks by MP Yasmin Qureshi, Co-Chair of APPG Maldives, who highlighted the importance of international support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), particularly through increased financial assistance, technical expertise, and sustained global engagement.
President Dr. Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to deepening its bilateral relationship with the United Kingdom, emphasising shared values, mutual respect, and the historical connections between the peoples of both countries.
The President acknowledged the UK's support in areas such as justice sector reform, democratic consolidation, climate adaptation, defence cooperation, and capacity building.
The discussions also highlighted the significance of educational and cultural exchanges that have shaped Maldives–UK relations.
Participants engaged in forward-looking conversations to identify further areas of collaboration to enhance bilateral cooperation.
President Dr. Muizzu held a meeting with The Rt Hon David Lammy MP, the UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
Discussions centered on expanding cooperation in fisheries, climate change adaptation, renewable energy, and advancing education and scholarship opportunities.
Both sides reiterated their commitment to advancing bilateral ties and exploring new avenues for collaboration across sectors critical to the Maldives’ development priorities.
The meeting coincides with the upcoming 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the United Kingdom, first formalised on July 26, 1965.
