The Maldivian government has secured a USD 50 million loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to ease pressure on state finances caused by rising international fuel prices.

The financing was secured under the Energy Security Emergency Assistance Project, which is intended to provide budgetary support as global fuel costs increase amid geopolitical tensions and conflicts in the Middle East.

Finance Minister Hassan Zareer signed the loan agreement on behalf of the government, while State Trading Organization (STO) Managing Director and CEO Shimad Ibrahim signed the project agreement for the state-owned company.

ADB Regional Head of the Regional Cooperation and Integration Unit Dr. Thiam Hee Ng signed both agreements on behalf of the development bank.

According to the Finance Ministry, the project will help offset increased government spending on fuel imports and subsidies resulting from higher international prices.

The funding forms part of the government's efforts to secure concessional financing from international financial institutions while managing growing fiscal pressures.

Officials from the Finance Ministry, STO and ADB attended the signing ceremony.

The government said the financing is expected to provide immediate fiscal relief while supporting efforts to maintain long-term debt sustainability.

The agreement comes as fluctuations in global energy prices continue to pose challenges for import-dependent economies such as the Maldives, where fuel costs have a direct impact on government expenditure and the wider economy.
