More than 300,000 tourists have stayed in guesthouses across the Maldives so far this year, marking 22 percent of total visitor arrivals, according to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism.

The ministry’s weekly report reveals that the country recorded 1,461,682 tourist arrivals year-to-date, with 317,178 opting for guesthouse accommodations. Resorts remain the dominant choice, hosting 1,053,055 visitors, accounting for 73.5 percent of all arrivals.

Hotels welcomed 33,513 tourists, while cruise liners brought in 26,550 visitors during the same period.

China continues to lead as the top source market, contributing 268,117 tourists this year.

Russia follows in second place with 209,815 visitors, while the United Kingdom ranks third with 110,983 arrivals.

Italy and Germany round out the top five, with India holding sixth position.

The tourism sector has faced headwinds following disruptions to Middle Eastern air routes after US attacks on Iran on February 28.

Numerous flights transiting the region experienced delays or cancellations, while rising transport costs have placed additional pressure on the industry.

Despite these challenges, guesthouses have carved out a significant share of the market, offering more affordable alternatives to resort stays and attracting budget-conscious travelers seeking authentic local experiences.

Industry observers note that the guesthouse segment’s 22 percent share reflects growing diversification in the Maldives’ tourism landscape, traditionally dominated by high-end resort properties.

The government has continued to promote the guesthouse sector as part of efforts to spread tourism benefits to local islands and communities beyond private resort concessions.
