Opposition protest continues yet another night with 11 people being arrested
The opposition has continued its protest yet another night with protestors gathering near the opposition party office.
Protestors have been calling for the release of the Former President and Opposition leader Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. Police have now blocked protestors from gathering in front of the office
Most recently, President Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison by the Criminal Court on December 25. However, Opposition said that they would not accept the verdict and has been staging a series of protests. The opposition has called this verdict "Haran Hukum".
After the verdict, the opposition staged a protest calling for the release of Former President Yameen. According to the opposition, Police have been blocking and using excessive force to disperse the peaceful protesters.
A massive police force was deployed to disperse the protesters tonight. So far, 11 people have been arrested in connection with the protest.
Despite the following use of excessive, President Solih stated that he would provide freedom of expression and that his administration would be open. He repeated the following once again during a rally last Thursday.
The opposition has disclosed that, despite the president's claim, more than 70 persons have been detained in connection with protests by the opposition over the last two weeks.
