Maldives intellectual property office act to take effect from January 2026

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Maldives Intellectual Property Office Act, following its passage in parliament on August 11.

The new legislation establishes a comprehensive framework for the protection and promotion of intellectual property rights in the country.

It mandates the creation of the Maldives Intellectual Property Office, outlining its responsibilities and authority to oversee intellectual property matters nationwide.

According to the President’s Office, the Act is designed to foster innovation and creativity within the commercial sector, ultimately contributing to the Maldives’ economic development.

Additionally, the legislation calls for the establishment and management of a national Intellectual Property Register.

The Maldives Intellectual Property Office Act is set to come into effect on January 1, 2026.
