President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, in his National Day address delivered on the historic island of Utheemu in Haa Alifu Atoll, made a strong appeal for Maldivians to take personal responsibility in preserving and passing on the nation’s cultural and moral identity.

Highlighting that this responsibility transcends governmental efforts, the president stressed that true national progress depends on the collective resolve of citizens.

The foremost task before us is to revitalise and nurture our national identity and ensure it is passed on to future generations. Only then can we advance as a united nation.

President stated

While acknowledging the government’s role in implementing development projects, he emphasised that cultivating intellectual and moral integrity, especially among the youth was central to building a strong national legacy rooted in the sacrifices of past generations.

Governments will fulfil their responsibilities in development. But the greater task of moral and intellectual growth lies with each individual

He added

The ceremony also paid tribute to national achievements, with President Dr. Muizzu commending the people of Utheemu for preserving Utheemu Ganduvaru, a heritage site maintained for over 500 years.

He congratulated recipients of the National Award of Honour, the National Award for Recognition, and the Order of the Dignified Rule of the Dhiyamigili Dynasty (ODRDD).

Turning to broader social concerns, the president voiced alarm over the erosion of values that once defined Maldivian society.

He criticised the misuse of freedom of expression for defamation and personal attacks, urging citizens to exercise rights within ethical boundaries.

Every freedom, every right must exist within limits

He warned

We must return to the virtues that once shaped our society

He added

Calling for a moral and spiritual awakening grounded in Islamic teachings, President Dr. Muizzu cautioned that neglecting these principles could endanger the country’s identity. He urged all Maldivians to recommit to sincerity, trustworthiness, and shared responsibility for the nation’s future.

Comprehensive national development depends on the moral strength of its people

He concluded
