Former Vice President and Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor has criticized the focus on symbolic gestures in Maldivian politics, writing that true national progress should be measured by tangible results rather than ceremonies and rhetoric.

In a statement shared on X, Adeeb highlighted the importance of ensuring citizens have access to basic needs such as food security, relief from debt, adequate housing, and fair participation in the nation’s economy.

He also pointed to the role of modern financial tools, such as e-wallets, in creating a more inclusive economy.

Our ancestors did not speak in lofty words or hide behind ceremonies, Boduthakurufaanu saved this nation through action, foreign aid, and the love of the Maldivian people. That spirit of decisive action is what we must embrace today.

Adeeb, who previously served as vice president and tourism minister, was sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined MVR 2 million for his involvement in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.

His sentence was significantly reduced and pardoned during the final days of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, after which Adeeb left the country and has not returned.
