President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that Former President and MDP President Mohamed Nasheed wants to become a prime minister but not a president.

Speaking at a press conference held at President's Office, the President stated Speaker Nasheed now prefers the position of Prime Minister rather than President of the Maldives.

President Solih stated that Nasheed sent a message to the President in April saying that he wants to run the country as the Prime Minister.

Nasheed requested in the message that a new administration is formed by February of the following year and that the system is changed. Additionally, he requested that the 2023 presidential election be cancelled.

Although, Nasheed support the Parliamentary system of governance he has opted to run for MDP's Presidential Primary.  Most recently a rift between both MDP leaders has led to the creation of two factions between the two leaders.
