Maldives President Dr. Muizzu makes history with marathon 15-hour press conference
In a historic first for both the Maldives and the world, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu held a nearly 15-hour uninterrupted press conference lasting exactly 14 hours and 54 minutes on Sunday, during which he engaged directly with journalists and answered a wide range of questions.
The unprecedented event, which began at 10:00 a.m. and concluded at 12:54 a.m. the following day, was organized to mark World Press Freedom Day.
It became the longest press conference ever held by a President, and surpasses the 14-hour world record previously set by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2019.
Throughout the lengthy session, President Muizzu stood at the podium while journalists remained seated.
The event was only briefly adjourned four times to accommodate prayer breaks.
Every journalist present was given the chance to ask questions, with some taking the opportunity to engage in extended discussions lasting over 30 minutes.
President fielded a broad spectrum of inquiries, ranging from national policies to personal matters.
In some instances, questions included unverified claims and controversial allegations.
At one point, a journalist even invited a colleague to join the discussion via phone to pose additional questions directly to the President which was allowed as well.
While some attendees raised concerns over questions that were seen as overly personal or lacking relevance, the President remained composed and responded to each one with patience and clarity.
Social media users and observers have widely commended President Dr. Muizzu for his endurance, transparency, and willingness to engage in such a prolonged and open dialogue with the press.
This marathon press conference is being hailed as a milestone in Maldivian political history and a strong message in support of press freedom.
