Opposition leader and Former President Abdulla Yameen have been taken to Maafushi Prison to serve his 11-year prison sentence after being found guilty of accepting bribes and money laundering.

Criminal Court on Sunday sentenced the opposition leader to 11 years in prison and the sentencing was made around 18:00 hrs. After sentencing, President Yameen was taken to Maafushi jail. 

Judge Ahmed Shakil has sentenced President Yameen for accepting brides from Former Felidhoo member Yoosuf Naeem and laundering money over the sales of Vaavu Aarah. 

He was accused of abusing his position as President and taking USD 1 million in bribes to facilitate the sale of Vaavu Aarah for Yoosuf Naeem. 

This is the second time Former President Yameen has been taken to jail during the current administration.
