Abbas Adil Riza, who previously served as a spokesman for the President's Office, has been arrested. 

He was arrested on charges of making several statements on social media to incite hatred among the public. 


According to the government, he had called setting Indian Embassy on fire. The government stated that on Friday, he tweeted:

Abbas has claimed that this was not his Twitter account. 

"On February 8, the Indian ordered to set fire across Addu. We have not taken revenge on it. We should start with the Embassy"

However, stated it is not the Twitter account he uses. He said he had complained to the police last year against the Twitter account.

The Maldivian government condemned Abbas's tweet on India.
