Over 74 AFCON workers injured in last night's K. Gulhifalhu fire
Over 70 people were hurt when a housing complex built at K. Gulhifalhu to house the employees of India's Afcons Infrastructure caught fire early on Friday morning.
The fire incident was reported at roughly 12:30 in the morning, the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) reports. MNDF has claimed that the lodging facility, which is located on the artificial island of Gulhifalhu, can accommodate 465 people.
The injured included 60 patients at Tree Top Hospital in Hulhumale and 13 at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Broken limbs, other severe wounds, and various degrees of burns were among the injuries received by victims who leapt out of burning buildings. Smoke inhalation was also treated for in certain cases.
Both the state of the lodging facilities and the origin of the fire are still unknown. Photos and videos from the incident demonstrate how quickly the fire spread.
Firefighters were sent to Gulhifalhu when MNDF received word of the incident at 12:31 a.m., according to MNDF. At 1:52 in the morning, the fire was put out.
An apartment building where many expatriates from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and India were staying caught fire. Ten residents of the apartment building above Nirufehige perished in a fire that started in a garage below the building. Eight of them are Indian, while two are Bangladeshis.
