The Chinese Embassy in The Maldives has stated that it is sad that the Maldives government official did not participate in the China-Indian Ocean Region Forum.

A statement released by the Chinese Embassy stated that the Chinese side had extended the government and several private parties from the Maldives. However, the statement reads that the government of Maldives did not participate in the China-Indian Ocean Region Forum.

Regrettably, the Maldivian Government officials did not take the opportunity to participate in it. H.E. Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan, former President of the Maldives, participated in the Forum as a renowned scholar and shared his insights on how the international community should work together to overcome such common challenges as climate change and COVID-19, which was highly appreciated.

the Chinese embassy said in a statement

According to a statement made by the Chinese Embassy, the former president of the Maldives, Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, did attend in a scholarly and personal manner.

The Forum is a part of the Chinese side's initiatives to carry out the Global Development Initiative put forth by President Xi Jinping with the intention of enabling the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Three international organizations and high-level representatives from 19 regional nations were in attendance.

The Maldivian government did not participate in the forum. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also issued a statement requesting India to inform that Dr Waheed attended the forum in his capacity. Critics of the government have stated that India's influence over the government led to the decisions.

Since coming to power President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government has adopted India's first policy. The opposition has earlier stated the government cannot do anything without the consent of India.
