President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has approved the development of a comprehensive masterplan aimed at reducing tobacco consumption across the Maldives.

This decision, based on a recommendation from the Cabinet, introduces additional measures to strengthen existing tobacco control laws, with the ultimate goal of eliminating tobacco use within the next four years.

As part of the government's intensified efforts to combat tobacco use, President Dr. Muizzu announced on Monday that the import duty on cigarettes and bidi will be nearly tripled.

This move is expected to significantly increase the price of cigarettes, making them less accessible.

In a further step, the President has ordered a ban on the importation of vapes, a popular tobacco product, starting from November 15.

Additionally, he has directed authorities to take all necessary actions to completely prohibit the use, possession, manufacturing, sale, advertising, and free distribution of vaping devices in the country, with the ban taking effect on December 15.

During a recent Cabinet meeting, President Dr. Muizzu instructed that the first draft of the tobacco control masterplan be presented for discussion at the upcoming Cabinet session on October 27, 2024.

The masterplan aims to promote a smoke-free society through several key initiatives.

The Cabinet's proposal includes empowering social workers to support anti-smoking efforts, providing incentives for islands that are free from smoking, and offering financial backing for social activities on these recognized non-smoking islands.

President Dr. Muizzu has also directed authorities to ensure that free smoking cessation programs are made available at all health centers to assist individuals who wish to quit smoking.

These combined efforts represent the government's strong commitment to tackling the harmful effects of tobacco and promoting healthier lifestyles across the nation.
