Hassan Latheef in Parliament

Former MDP Chairperson and Current Parliament Member for Henveiru North Hassan Latheef have accused the government of attempting to remove Mohamed Nasheed from parliament.

Hassan Latheef's accusation comes after a constitutional case was filed against Nasheed in the Supreme Court by lawyer Ahmed Talib.

Reacting to the recent development, Hassan Latheef tweeted

There is no basis in Talib's case, I believe the government is at the bottom of it

Said Hassan Latheef

Latheef stated that this attempt to remove Speaker Mohamed Nasheed was started when they did not receive enough numbers to remove the Speaker of Parliament within the Parliament.

According to lawyer Talib, the case was filed in the supreme court due to Nasheed's representation of Sri Lanka at the COP-27 summit.

Talib has taken Article 75 of the Constitution into consideration when he files the case. Talib considers that Nasheed has now violated the clause.

The indictment claims that Nasheed's representation of a different nation at an international gathering goes against the Constitution's stipulations for members of parliament.

According to Article 75 of the Constitution, members of Parliament are required to act in the best interests of the country and the general welfare of the populace. According to the article, no member should use his position to advance the caste interests of another individual with whom he or she has a close relationship.

"... They should take into account the welfare of the entire country and its people while representing the constituencies in which they have been elected," reads the article taking talib against Nasheed.

In response to this current case, the Former MDP Chairperson and Current Parliament Member for Henveiru North Hassan Latheef accused the government via Twitter. Latheef is a close aide of the Former President and Current Parliament Member Nasheed.

MDP has been recently been having several riffs within the ruling party where several factions have formed.
