Direct flights between China and Addu City to launch this year: Minister Faisal
Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal has announced that direct flights between China’s provinces and Maldives’ southernmost Addu City will commence this year.
Speaking at an event held by the People’s National Congress (PNC) on Thursday, Faisal emphasized that this initiative aligns with President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu’s vision to enhance tourism in Addu.
We are working to start direct flights to Addu from various provinces in China within this year
Faisal stated.
The Minister criticized former administrations for their lack of progress in developing tourism in Addu City.
In contrast, he highlighted President Muizzu’s commitment, referencing the President’s campaign pledge to reopen Shangri-La Resort within his first year in office.
Faisal noted that significant efforts are underway to fulfill this promise.
During his visit to the ITB Fair in China, Faisal met with Chinese airlines to discuss the commencement of direct flights to Addu.
He outlined plans to establish a seaplane terminal in Addu and expand tourism across the southern regions, including Fuvahmulah City, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, and Gaafu Alifu Atoll.
Faisal stressed that reopening the Shangri-La Resort is crucial for promoting tourism in Addu.
He revealed ongoing discussions with the resort’s management and expressed willingness to meet with Shangri-La’s owners if necessary.
Faisal also noted that Shangri-La’s owners are keen to reopen the resort once direct flights between Addu City and China begin.
The 284-bed Shangri-La Resort, which opened in 2009, closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The government recently released its stake in Addu Investment Private Limited, the resort’s operator, to facilitate the reopening process and remove any obstacles.
The reopening of Shangri-La Resort and the establishment of direct flights from China are expected to significantly boost tourism in Addu City and the surrounding regions.
