President Yameen meeting EU delegation

Opposition leader and Progressive Coalition's Presidential Candidate President Abdul Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Monday meets with a European Union delegation.

During his term in office, President Yameen maintained few links with the West and engaged in the debate over several religious and national concerns. Since the end of his tenure, he has not yet met with the delegates of the blocs that resemble the EU.

In a meeting held in the PPM party office, the EU delegation expressed concern over the current debt ratio of the Maldives and questioned President Yameen on how he would solve the debt issue if he return to power. President Yameen in response provided assurances to the delegation that he would find a solution if he returns to power.

The delegation highlighted the issue that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration borrows and uses it for consumable purposes as a matter of concern, the EU clarified how policies would be implemented under President Yameen's administration.

President Yameen speaking with the EU expressed his concerns about the judiciary being influenced by the government, the Judicial Services Commission and the lack of an independent judiciary.

President Yameen also held discussions with the EU on ways to facilitate higher prices for fish exported by the Maldives, to seek assistance for the establishment of waste disposal systems in the islands, and to finance various areas of development.
