Modi’s visit marks ‘Reset’ as Maldives reaffirms strategic ties with India: Former Foreign Minister Shaheed
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Shaheed has described the recent visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Maldives as a significant step toward restoring bilateral trust and reaffirming the longstanding strategic partnership between the two countries.
Speaking in an interview with Indian broadcaster NDTV, Shaheed said Prime Minister Modi’s visit which took place from July 25 to 26 came at a meaningful time as the Maldives celebrated its 60th Independence Day.
He said the visit demonstrated India’s goodwill and commitment to maintaining close ties with the Maldives despite recent diplomatic strains.

He added
Shaheed noted that the diplomatic relationship had endured a rough patch after the political changes in the Maldives.
He said the visit signals a reset in ties and an opportunity for both nations to deepen cooperation.
This is the opening for President Muizzu to reset trust between the two capitals
he said.
Shaheed also emphasized India’s historical role in the Maldives’ development, citing its contributions since the 1970s in areas such as infrastructure, health, education, construction, and tourism.
He called India an important partner especially in times of crisis or emergencies in present times or earlier and highlighted its ongoing support in major infrastructure projects.

The visit, which coincided with the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence, was seen as a symbol of renewed cooperation following a period of strained ties.
