The government has said that,  they will not hesitate to take action against those who insult foreign leaders.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement yesterday that the government is aware of the insulting comments made against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals on social media platforms. And that they are the personal views of those who speak and none of them represent the views of the government.

The ministry also said that freedom of expression should be used in a democratic and responsible manner, without spreading hatred and anger. The foreign ministry also said that such talk should be considered whether it will disrupt relations between Maldives and other countries.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the relevant government agencies will not hesitate to take action against those who insult such persons.

The ministry's comments come amid controversy over a controversial comments made by two Maldivian deputy ministers towards Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for posting a video promoting tourism of the Lakshadweep region during his visit there.

The issue has sparked verbal attacks between the two countries at various levels and many in India, the country with the highest number of tourists visiting Maldives, are calling for a boycott of the country's tourism
