The National Drug Agency (NDA) has partnered with a Chinese university to explore the use of artificial intelligence in drug rehabilitation and psychological support services in the Maldives.

The agency signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Yunnan University to develop and implement AI-based solutions for addiction treatment, rehabilitation and mental health support.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the NDA by Ahmed Siddiq, State Minister at the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology and Chairman of the NDA Board.

Following the signing, representatives from Yunnan University presented NDA officials with potential applications of AI in treatment and support programs.

The partnership comes as the Maldives continues to face challenges related to drug addiction and the capacity of rehabilitation services.

NDA figures indicate that more than 10,000 people in the country are currently affected by drug addiction.

The agency operates nine treatment centers across key population areas but has previously highlighted the need to expand capacity to meet demand for rehabilitation services.

Another major challenge is supporting individuals after they complete treatment.

The NDA has noted that some recovering individuals struggle to reintegrate into their communities because of limited family and social support, potentially increasing the risk of relapse.

The agency believes AI-based technologies could strengthen areas such as monitoring, counseling and continuity of care following treatment.

The new partnership is expected to explore how technology can complement existing rehabilitation services while improving access to psychological and recovery support for people affected by drug addiction.
