President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said the Maldives has a responsibility to speak firmly against violence targeting humanitarian workers and to stand up for vulnerable communities.

In a message marking World Humanitarian Day, President Dr. Muizzu expressed solidarity with humanitarian personnel around the world who continue to risk their lives to provide assistance to people affected by crises.

He noted that the demand for humanitarian aid continues to grow as communities face conflict, displacement, hunger and climate-related emergencies.

The president highlighted the situation in Gaza as a serious example of the erosion of humanitarian protections, pointing to restrictions on aid delivery, blockades and violence against humanitarian personnel.

He condemned such actions as violations of international law, reaffirmed the Maldives' support for the Palestinian people and called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.

President Dr. Muizzu said small states depend heavily on a rules-based international system in which international law is applied fairly and consistently.

As a party to the Fourth Geneva Convention, the Maldives remains committed to upholding international humanitarian law and protecting civilians and humanitarian personnel.

The president called on countries to respect humanitarian operations and uphold the core principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence.

He also paid tribute to humanitarian workers who have lost their lives while delivering life-saving assistance.

President Dr. Muizzu said the international community must ensure stronger protection and safety for those working on the front lines of humanitarian crises.

World Humanitarian Day is observed annually on August 19 to honor humanitarian workers who have been killed or injured while responding to crises and to recognize those who continue to risk their lives to assist people in need.
