Every year, the green islands and mangroves of Maldives become the destination of a large number of migratory bird families.

This year's migratory birds are believed to have started their migratory season with the Flamingos in sight at  Kulhudhfushi city's mangrove.

Next up is the sunny season. Maldives is chosen as a stopover destination for some birds that migrate to the African continent during the cold season.

The  migration of dragonflies and the migratory birds is a sign of the beginning of the sunny season.

During this period, the wind direction from the north of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) makes it easier for such seasonal birds to travel across the Arabian Sea. They often cross Maldives by getting lost or divided into groups of some species of birds.

However, it is sad to note that the practice of catching and harming birds visiting Maldives is still  in the society.

Using devices such as traps , the migratory seasonal birds were caught and kept in cages. However, a regulation has been made for such birds and all birds migrating to Maldives are now legally protected.

All birds visiting Maldives are protected under the Environmental Protection and Conservation Act (Act No. 93/4) and the Naturally Protected Species Regulations (Regulation No. 2021/R-25). It is also a crime to catch and abuse such birds. It is an offense punishable under this rule.
