Two journalists covering the oppositions’ protest was pushed to the ground by a Police officer.

Today, whilst trying to disperse the journalists in the Republic Square, a police officer pushed two journalists to the ground.

A video showing the scene has gone viral in social media causing the Police to come under severe criticism by the public.

Due to this Commissioner of Police (CP) Mohamed Hameed has ordered an investigation in to the issue.

"Regarding the video of an officer pushing the journalists, I have ordered for the officer to be removed from his responsibilities and for the Special Operations unit to investigate the matter." CP Hameed stated.

Even before, journalists covering protests have been injured by the police due to use of excessive force.

Multiple agencies and independent organizations have been constantly expressing their concerns regarding the obstruction of press freedom.

Today's issue happened during a protest by the opposition coalition against the imprisonment of their leader and former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.

Numerous members of the opposition leadership was arrested including member of Naifaru constituency Ahmed Shiyam, member of Mahibadhoo constituency Ahmed Thoriq, PNC PG leader Adam Shareef.
