The Government of Japan has gifted five speedboats to the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to enhance its marine operational capacity and law enforcement efforts at sea.

The official handover ceremony took place today at K. Dhoonidhoo, where the vessels were presented by the Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko, and received on behalf of MPS by Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen.

The event was attended by Deputy Commissioner Farhad Fikry, senior MPS officers, and officials from the Government of Japan.

Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner Naveen expressed gratitude to Japan for its continued support, noting that the speedboats will significantly strengthen policing on Maldivian waters.

He said that the gifting of these vessels will further enhance our marine operations and contribute to more effective law enforcement at sea.

Ambassador Rumiko highlighted that the gift is intended to improve the capacity of the marine police and support efforts to strengthen maritime safety and security.

She expressed hope that the vessels would help address challenges faced by the MPS in safeguarding the nation’s seas.

As a gesture of appreciation, MPS presented an honorary plaque to the Government of Japan.

The gift follows a series of contributions by Japan to Maldivian law enforcement and security agencies.

Last year, Japan gifted 54 cars and four vans to MPS, along with other equipment.

Japan has also previously provided vehicles and resources to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Maldives Customs Service.
