Nasheed resigns from MDP
Speaker for People's Parliament and leader of MDP, Mohamed Nasheed, has resigned from the party.
In the resignation letter sent by Nasheed to MDP's chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail, he stated that he does not see that it is the best course of action for him to remain in MDP considering the current situation in Maldives. Hence, he stated that he is resigning from the party.
In 2003, Nasheed was an active leader in the formation of MDP. He had also signed in the permission form for the registration of the party back in 2005, during the government of President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom. And in the same year he was elected as the first chairperson for MDP.
Nasheed has resigned at a time where his loyalists have made the decision to create a party named "The Democrats", and submitted the form for registration to Elections Commission (EC).
However, EC's work has come to a halt due to its members, Ali Nashath, Mohamed Asif, and Dr. Mohamed Zahir, announcing that they would not participate in meetings with the commission's president, Fuad Thaufeeq.
