MDP members protest against Paliament Speaker Nasheed, calling him "Mugabe"
MDP's parliamentary members have protested today, calling the Parliament's Speaker Mohamed Nasheed "Robert Mugabe".
In today's Parliament meeting, member of Faresmaathodhaa constituency Hussain Mohamed Latheef, had submitted an issue stating that Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath had violated the parliament's privileges.
MDP members directed their disapproval at Nasheed for allowing the submission of the issue. Member of Maradhoo constituency Ibrahim Shareef stated that the issue was submitted against the rules of the Parliament and that it should not be allowed.
However, Speaker Nasheed responded that it is being submitted according to the rules and opened for voting on the issue.
The issue was dismissed by MDP, which holds parliament majority. Consequently, Nasheed stated that while two issues had been submitted, one of these issues were submitted to the committee and that no MP's can interfere in submitting that issue to the committee.
In regards to this, MDP members had expressed their displeasure and raised systematic points while member of Naifaru constituency Ahmed Shiyam stated that the debate for no confidence issue against the Attorny General Riffath cannot be continued in the Parliament unless the issue submitted to committee is continued.
The opposition and MDP's members began making noise in the Parliament and tried to disrupt the parliamentry system causing the Speaker Nasheed to discontinue the issue as well as well as the meeting temporarily.
Due to this MDP members gathered infront of the presidency protesting and began calling the Speaker "Mugabe", a dictator who ruled Zimbabwe.
MDP members claim the the opposition and the Speaker has been working together to prohibit the implementation of government policies and avoiding working on important bills submitted to the Parliament by the Government. This has caused MDP members to direct their dissatisfaction at Nasheed.
MDP members also suspect the Speaker of trying to give the opposition ample opportunities while narrowing the oppotunities for MDP members.
In addition, the MDP members have also expressed discontentment about the Speaker allowing submission of "useless" resolutions and emergency issues by the opposition and spending the Parliament's important time on "useless" things.
