A party known as "The Democrats" emerged as a result of a decision made by the Nasheed faction led by Mohamed Nasheed, who serves as both the Speaker of the Parliament and the President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The Elections Commission (EC) has granted official approval for the establishment of this political party.

At the conference convened by the Elections Commission (EC) to discuss the granting of this permit, it was announced that a three-month period would be allocated for The Democrats to recruit a minimum of 3000 members for their party.

Upon reaching this membership threshold, an official inauguration of the party will be scheduled and invitations will be extended accordingly.

On Sunday, the Elections Commission (EC) received a formal request from the Nasheed Faction branch of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), seeking permission for their newly proposed political party, "The Democrats." The request was submitted in the form provided by the EC for such purposes.

Following the submission of the request, the branch provided information to the media regarding their newly formed party. Afshan, the former CEO of LGA and current spokesperson of the branch, confirmed that the party's name is "The Democrats."

While discussing the party's name, Afshan emphasized that the party was driven by a commitment to uphold the principles of Maldivian democracy.

In order to reflect this commitment, the name "The Democrats" was chosen after seeking opinions from numerous individuals and considering the rules and regulations governing the democratic process in the Maldives.

Afshan further stated that "The Democrats" party will adhere to democratic rules and regulations, as implied by its name. One of the party's objectives will be to promote financial comfort and stability for the people of the Maldives.

Last Wednesday, several members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the party currently in government, departed from the party citing a deviation from its original ideologies. Subsequently, they announced the formation of a new political party.

In addition to obtaining the necessary permits from the Elections Commission (EC) to establish itself as a political party, The Democrats have made the decision to participate in the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for this year.
