STELCO restores power to Malé and Hulhumalé; Grid failure under investigation
The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced that electricity services have been fully restored to Malé and Hulhumalé following a massive blackout that disrupted power to the capital region on Sunday afternoon.
The outage, which began around 12:30 p.m., marks one of the most extensive power failures in recent history in the Greater Malé Region.
After several hours of concerted recovery efforts, STELCO began gradually restoring electricity, eventually returning full service to all areas except for the Hulhumalé 1 Ruhgandu transformer, which is still undergoing restoration.
In a post on the social media platform X, STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy expressed his gratitude to the company’s staff and others who contributed to the restoration work.

he stated
while also issuing an apology to residents for the inconvenience caused.
Fahmy assured the public that the company will implement all necessary measures to prevent such incidents from recurring.
He added that the cause of the blackout is currently under investigation and that further information will be shared once identified.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has also ordered a formal investigation into the incident, as STELCO engineers continue their efforts to determine the source of the failure.
STELCO has urged customers, other than those connected to the Hulhumalé 1 Ruhgandu transformer to report any ongoing power issues via their emergency hotline at 104.
