Detaining a senior citizen for exercising her legitimate rights is unacceptable: Dr Ahmed Shaheed
Former Maldivian Foreign Minister and UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief Dr Ahmed Shaheed have stated it is unacceptable for the police to use aggressive conduct in detaining a senior citizen for exercising her legitimate rights.
His comments come in response to a social media video that showed an elderly woman being detained by Maldives Police during an opposition demonstration demanding the release of Former President Yameen. Dr Shaheed took to Twitter to express his concerns over the following incident last night.
In his tweet, the former Foreign Minister stated, "The aggressive conduct of Maldives Police in detaining an elderly person exercising her legitimate rights is not acceptable. Those making this & other arrests in a similar manner must be held accountable"
Maldives Police Services has come under fire over the following incident. The commissioner of Police Hameed has also stated that they would investigate the arrest of an elderly woman during last night's protest.
