Former President Yameen found guilty over the sale of V. Aarah
The Criminal Court on Sunday convicted Former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom guilty in the case against him regarding the sale of V. Aarah for resort development.
Yameen was accused of bribery and money laundering over the sale of Aarah during his administration.
Former President Yameen was suspected of misusing his position and accepting a U$1 million bribe over the sale of Vaavu Aarah from Former Parliamentarian for Felidhoo constituency Yoosuf Naeem. He has also been found guilty of laundering the money.
The state has also charged Former Parliamentarian Naeem for giving a bride.
Former President Yameen has been found guilty of both charges in the ongoing trial.
The trial court has been adjourned for the day after it was announced that the sentencing session would be held at 2:00 p.m. The state had sought a hefty penalty.
The next step will be to decide the quantum of punishment once the two cases are proved. President Yameen faces a minimum sentence of eight years in prison if convicted of two counts. If convicted of bribery, he faces a minimum sentence of three years in prison. He faces a minimum sentence of five years in prison if found guilty of money laundering.
