U.S. provides an additional USD3 million to Maldives
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and The Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs has signed a revised agreement on bilateral assistance agreement to obligate an additional $3 million to support public financial management and good governance.
The agreement was signed during a special ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel and USAID Mission Director Gabriel Grau signed the ninth amendment to the DOAG.
"Through this agreement, the US is providing $3 million to advance joint US-Maldives priorities in public finance and good governance,"
said USAID Deputy Assistant Administrator Änjali Kaur
The US has committed over $28 million in bilateral assistance to the Maldives since the two countries' historic bilateral assistance agreement was signed on March 12th, 2019, for projects to strengthen the rule of law, support decentralization efforts, improve public financial management, safeguard the environment, and most recently, adapt to climate change.
Through this partnership, USAID and its Maldivian partners have so far seen notable successes, including advancing evidence-based decision-making to support the nation's post-pandemic recovery and reducing the effects of climate change on the Addu and Fuvahmulah reserves, among other accomplishments.
Strengthening environmental resilience, putting into practice economic and democratic reforms, and fortifying civil society are all goals shared by USAID and the Maldivian government.
