Speaker Nasheed departs for Egypt to represent Sri Lanka at the COP27.
Parliament Speaker and Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed departed for Egypt on Friday to represent the neighbouring nation of Sri Lanka at the COP27 climate conference.
Nasheed will be attending COP27 as a member of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka’s national delegation and is set to remain Egypt until Wednesday.
Nasheed is a member of the Sri Lankan delegation to the conference being held in Sharm el-Sheikh, an Egyptian tourist city. Ranil Wickremesinghe, the president of Sri Lanka, has appointed Nasheed as climate change adverse and consults him on global climate issues.
Vice President Faisal Naseem also left on Friday to lead the Maldivian delegation.
Nasheed will attend a special meeting on Tuesday to talk about future preparations for nations most at risk from the climate issue, according to a statement from parliament. The Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) and the Vulnerable Group of 20 will coordinate it (V20).
Nasheed is set to also meet with senior representatives of CVF, V20, and other nations during the fringes of COP27.
Nasheed has most recently attended a meeting CVF and also was recently in Sri Lanka to discuss getting in foreign assistance to overcome the economic crisis of the island nation.
