Former President Nasheed warns of impending WWIII amid rising global tensions
Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has voiced grave concerns about the escalating geopolitical tensions, suggesting that the world might be on the brink of a third world war.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday afternoon, Nasheed, who is currently serving as the Secretary General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), highlighted several alarming trends.
Nasheed pointed to plans by major global powers to enforce compulsory military enlistment, alongside surging military expenditures and a burgeoning arms race.
He also expressed anxiety over the recent electoral successes of populist leaders and the rising tide of anti-immigration sentiments and racism.
Unless cooler heads prevail, I fear we are heading towards WWIII... and that's not to mention climate heating!
Nasheed wrote in his post.
His comments come in the wake of substantial military investments by leading nations, including the United States, Russia, and China.
Nasheed, who announced his decision to step back from active politics in December 2023, relocated to Ghana on January 30 to assume his new role with the CVF.
Nasheed’s warning underscores the need for diplomatic efforts to mitigate these rising tensions and avert a potential global conflict.
