Maldives is placing greater emphasis on scientific research to protect its marine ecosystems and ensure the long-term sustainability of resources that support the country's economy and communities, Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam said.

Speaking at the opening of the 6th Marine Science Symposium organized by the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), Minister Shiyam highlighted the country's extensive coral reefs and diverse marine species as critical assets that require careful management.

The minister said scientific research is becoming increasingly important as the Maldives confronts climate change and seeks effective ways to adapt to its impacts.

He also noted that continued exploration of the oceans is revealing new findings, demonstrating how much remains to be understood about marine ecosystems.

Minster Shiyam said the government's vision of developing a research-driven society includes using scientific evidence to guide economic and environmental policies.

He also stressed the importance of strengthening national expertise in marine science.

The government aims to expand cooperation with international researchers while developing the skills needed for Maldivians to eventually lead and conduct marine research independently.

The symposium, which has been held every two years since 2016, features 47 research presentations this year, including 32 oral presentations and 15 poster presentations.

The presentations cover five major thematic areas, bringing together research conducted on various aspects of the Maldives' marine environment.

Organizers expect the event to facilitate the exchange of scientific knowledge while creating opportunities to translate research findings into national policies and practical approaches to marine resource management.

The government has identified science-based decision-making as an important component of efforts to protect marine biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience and safeguard the livelihoods that depend on the ocean.
