Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is set to hold a protest on August 13, with party officials saying the demonstration will focus on rising living costs, increasing prices and what they describe as worsening conditions in the Maldives.

Former MDP Vice President Mohamed Shifaz said the protest is intended to pressure the government to take meaningful action to address the challenges facing the country.

He said the demonstration will also provide an opportunity to raise public awareness about the administration's policies and conduct.

Shifaz identified the rising cost of essential goods and the broader increase in living expenses as key issues behind the planned protest.

He added that the MDP would proceed with the demonstration regardless of whether other political parties participate.

During a press briefing, MDP parliamentarian Abdulla Waheed also criticized the government's approach to governance, alleging that recent actions have weakened democratic principles.

He accused the administration of using changes to the Constitution to support its policies and argued that the government has failed to introduce effective measures to address the country's worsening circumstances.

Waheed also raised concerns about the government's foreign policy, alleging that the public has not been adequately informed about its actions and decisions.

The protest is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. on August 13 near the Social Centre on Majeedhee Magu in Malé City.
