In a heartfelt speech at the closing ceremony of the onion distribution event held at Meeruma this evening, the  Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives H.E Wang Lixin celebrated the successful initiative and its positive impact on the Maldivian community.

She noted the significance of the donation, especially with the upcoming Eid festival, and emphasized the appreciation shown by the Maldivian people.

She praised the collaborative efforts of the volunteers and various organizations involved.

The Ambassador highlighted the longstanding friendship between China and the Maldives, which dates back to decades.

Over past 52 years of diplomatic relations, both nations have fostered mutual benefits and governmental cooperation, treating each other as equals.

She mentioned President Dr Muizzu's recent visit to China, where he and President Xi Jinping agreed to enhance people-to-people exchanges and practical cooperation.

She further praised the contributions of Chinese companies to the Maldives' social and economic development, citing projects like the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge and Velana International Airport.

The Ambassador stressed that Chinese companies are not only builders of infrastructure but also play a crucial role in enhancing the friendship between the two peoples.

This donation is a very good example of China undertaking social responsibility and sends a strong message to the Maldivian people that Chinese companies are here not only as builders of Belt and Road initiative projects but also a bridge connecting people of the two countries.

she remarked.

On May 26, a generous donation of over 44 tonnes of onions from the China Chamber of Commerce was successfully distributed to more than 7000 families to residents in Hiya flat, Phase 2.

At today's closing event, volunteers were awarded certificates of appreciation.

Midhuam Saudh, Vice President of the Maldives China Trade and Cultural Organization (MCTCO), spoke at the event, commending the dedication and hard work of the volunteers.

He praised the efforts of the 12-13 volunteers who hand-moved 7,830 bags.

Saudh also addressed questions regarding the distribution choices.

He explained that the initial plan was to distribute the onions across multiple islands, but delays due to bad weather and the lack of readily available ships led to the decision to distribute them in Malé.

He highlighted that given the perishable nature of the goods, it was crucial to act quickly.

Regarding the choice of Hiya flat, he noted that it was selected based on the distribution guidelines, as it had sufficient space to accommodate the recipients, allowed for a minimum of three people to see the process, and had CCTV surveillance for security.

The deputy chairman of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in the Maldives also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the profound significance of the donation.

He noted the importance of food security and expressed hope that the donation would support local households and improve their well-being.

He highlighted the involvement of Chinese companies in the development of the Maldives and appreciated the collaboration with the Maldivian government.

He extended heartfelt gratitude to STO, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the Maldives China Trade and Cultural Organization (MCTCO), the police service, and the volunteers for their crucial roles in making the distribution a success.
