The 93 members elected to the 20th parliamentary assembly took their oath of office on Tuesday morning, following tightly contested elections on April.

The People's National Congress (PNC) achieved a sweeping victory, securing a supermajority with 75 out of 93 seats.

The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Parliament at 09:00 am and officiated by Chief Justice Muthasim Adnan.

The first sitting of the new Parliament commenced at 10:15 am, during which Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla was elected as Speaker, and Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim was elected as Deputy Speaker.

The session's agenda included the compilation of parliamentary procedures under Article 88 of the Constitution.

Additionally, the PNC named Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah as its parliamentary group leader, making him the new majority leader.

The main opposition, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which saw a significant loss in the elections, winning only 12 seats, elected South Hithadhoo MP Ibrahim Nazil as its parliamentary group leader and the new minority leader.

Notably, only 11 out of the 87 members from the last assembly retained their seats, highlighting a significant shift in the parliamentary landscape.
