In a significant move at the 112th International Labour Conference (ILC2025), the International Labour Organization (ILO) has granted Observer Status to Palestine following a resolution adopted with overwhelming support.

The resolution passed with 386 votes in favour, 15 against, and 42 abstentions.

The Maldives, through its national delegation, proudly voted in favour of the resolution, reaffirming its longstanding support for the rights, dignity, and international recognition of the Palestinian people within global institutions.

This milestone represents a vital step toward enhancing Palestine’s voice and representation in the international labour community.

Following the vote, Minister of Employment and Labour, Dr. Ali Haidar Ahmed, met with the Palestinian delegation to personally convey the Maldives’ continued solidarity and commitment to justice and international cooperation.

Since October 7, when Israel began its ongoing genocide in Palestine, atleast 54,677 Palestinians have been killed including 17,400 children and atleast 125,530  injured and after a brief ceasefire the Israel broke the ceasefire on March 18.

The devastation has left entire communities destroyed, with the vast majority of casualties being women and children, underscoring the severe humanitarian toll of the continued offensive.
