New hospital to be built in Villimale', named China-Maldives friendship hospital

Maldives and China have officially signed the Letter of Exchange for the construction of a new more than 100 bedded hospital in Villimale’.

The project, a key outcome of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to China, marks a major step in strengthening healthcare collaboration between the two nations.

The new facility has been named the Villimale’ China-Maldives Friendship Hospital, reflecting the growing ties and ongoing development cooperation between both countries.

According to Health Ministry, project will be carried out with Chinese assistance under the ChinaAid program and will enter its design phase immediately, followed by construction set to begin next year.

Once completed, the hospital will feature advanced medical equipment and infrastructure, significantly expanding access to healthcare services for residents of the Greater Malé Region.

Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua, described the hospital as the second project to carry the "China-Maldives Friendship" title, following the iconic China-Maldives Friendship Bridge that connects Malé and Hulhulé. Sharing the news on social media platform X, Ambassador Kong noted:

With more than 110 beds, a full set of advanced medical devices, and professional support from China, I am confident this hospital will benefit Maldivian friends as much as the bridge has

He confirmed that the design and construction process will follow a structured bidding procedure, and training for medical staff will also be arranged during the development phase.
