President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has conveyed a heartfelt message of condolence today to Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister, H.E. James Marape, MP, following a catastrophic landslide that struck the country last Friday, claiming hundreds of lives.

President Dr Muizzu expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy, describing the loss of lives, livelihoods, and property as an unimaginable catastrophe.

On behalf of the Maldivian government and people, he extended sincere condolences, emphasizing the shared bond as fellow Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and expressing solidarity with the people of Papua New Guinea during this challenging time.

In his message, President Muizzu expressed hope for the swift and successful operation of search and rescue efforts at the disaster site.

He also offered prayers for the quick recovery of all those affected by the calamity.

According to Papua New Guinea’s National Disaster Centre, up to 2,000 people are feared to have been buried by the massive landslide in the mountainous Enga region in the north of the country.

This latest figure marks a significant increase from earlier estimates.

Rescuers have faced immense challenges in reaching the remote disaster site, leaving locals with no choice but to dig through the collapsed mountainside with whatever tools they can find.

This devastating event has left the affected communities in dire straits, highlighting the urgent need for international support and solidarity.
