President Dr. Muizzu has nominated former Commissioner General of Taxation Yazeed Mohamed and former Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation Hassan Zareer for the position of Commissioner General of Taxation.

The nominations were communicated to Parliament via a formal letter, with the Speaker referring them to the relevant parliamentary committee for consideration.

In a recent committee vote, Yazeed received 4 votes while Zareer received 10 votes.

The nominations aim to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of current Tax Commissioner Fathuhullah Jameel, who stepped down to run in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Both Yazeed and Zareer have extensive experience in tax administration, having previously served in key roles within the tax authority.

Their nominations come as the government seeks to maintain continuity and efficiency in tax administration amidst changing leadership.

Yazeed and Zareer's previous tenure as tax commissioners ended in 2019 following an amendment to the Administrative Taxation Act during the tenure of the ruling MDP.

The amendment required appointments to the top two positions at the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) to be made within 30 days of its implementation.

Despite the reopening of the positions, neither Yazeed nor Zareer contested for the roles at that time.

However, their nominations now signal a return to the tax administration sphere and an opportunity to contribute once again to the country's revenue management efforts.

The nominations will undergo thorough consideration by the parliamentary committee before any final decisions are made.

If approved, Yazeed or Zareer will assume the crucial role of Tax Commissioner, responsible for overseeing taxation policies and operations in the Maldives.
