In a proactive move aimed at enhancing security and accountability, the Maldives government has launched 'Operation Kurangi' – a comprehensive initiative focused on gathering biometric data of migrant workers across the nation.

Spearheaded by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, the operation seeks to achieve full biometric confirmation for all migrant workers, ensuring accurate information and legal status.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held in K. Himmafushi yesterday, Minister of Homeland Security Ali Ihusan emphasized the pivotal role of Operation Kurangi in addressing illegal immigration challenges.

He underscored the thorough preparatory efforts spanning five months, with a commitment to complete the nationwide endeavor within the next three years.

The first phase of the operation, inaugurated in Himmafushi, involves the meticulous collection of biometric data, including fingerprints and photographic identification, from migrant workers.

Minister Ihusan outlined the subsequent phases, which will focus on integrating undocumented migrants into the governance system and addressing unlawful employment practices.

The first leg launched at Himmafushi today is aimed at obtaining biometric data, including finger print and photographic identification, of immigrants and input their information into the government's relevant systems. Thenext two years we will work on sending back anyone who does not have official, verifiable documents who cannot be brought into the system.

Stated Minister Ihusan

Acknowledging past initiatives of such operation during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, Minister Ihusan highlighted the necessity of resolving the issue comprehensively, citing challenges encountered during previous registration processes.

Minister Ihusan addressed a significant challenge regarding the registration process in the past, highlighting that immigrants in local islands face difficulties due to registration procedures centralized in the capital city Male'.

To overcome this obstacle, arrangements have been made to conduct photographing and fingerprint collection directly from local island councils.

Additionally, for islands designated as resorts or industrial hubs, dedicated members of the campaign task force will travel to these locations, ensuring comprehensive coverage and accessibility for all migrant workers across the Maldives.

Central to the operation is the assurance of national security, with Minister Ihusan emphasizing the threat posed by undocumented migrants.

While the primary objective is not punitive, the government will take necessary action against those involved in criminal activities, ensuring deportation within 48 hours when warranted.

Operation Kurangi underscores the government's commitment to addressing illegal immigration effectively, with the collected data to be shared with island council authorities.

Minister Ihusan expressed confidence that the operation will bring about a permanent solution to the longstanding issue of illegal immigration in the Maldives, safeguarding national interests and promoting accountability.
