Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has requested a commutation of his 20-year jail sentence in connection with the MMPRC corruption scandal.

Maldives Correctional Service and the President's Office have also received requests to commute the sentence. The president's office received a request for relief under the Commutation and Amnesty Act. While the Maldives Correctional Services received a request for release under parole.

According to sources, Adeeb is trying to get legal remedies through lawyers.

However, the correctional service and President's Office did not comment on the following at this time.

The state had filed seven charges against adeeb for releasing 54 islands through MMPRC, with more than 150 charges against him. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison on the charges under a plea agreement that would ease his sentence.

In addition to the commutation of the jail sentence, the agreement also requires Adeeb to pay a fine of MVR 2 million for the corruption. Adeeb's Lawyers have expressed concern that under the Money Laundering Act, Adeeb could have been fined up to five times that amount (MVR 5 billion).

Adeeb is still under house arrest despite being sentenced to jail. He is currently in a Amin Avenue apartment in Hulhumale' under the supervision of the Correctional Service round-the-clock.

According to corrections, he was placed under house arrest for an indefinite period as he had to use a machine called BIPAP. He was advised by the doctor to use the machine as he was struggling to breathe and was suffering from headaches.

Earlier on the public criticised the government for granting him a major reprieve under the confession agreement and releasing him under house arrest. The state's decision not to prosecute the SOF bosses, who were involved in money laundering with MMPRC funds along with him has received a huge backlash. Locals have complained by stating that allegation against certain individuals is barely being investigated in connection with corruption cases.

While Adeeb is placed under house arrest based on his medical condition. There are multiple cases of inmates who are suffering from serious medical conditions. Just recently, an inmate passed away in jail while pending his trial. The inmate passed away due to breathing difficulties.

Although Adeeb, along with former MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath, has confessed to the corruption. They have been convicted in the case, while former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is facing trial on charges related to the scandal.

However, Yameen was acquitted of five years in prison in the first case of corruption by the Supreme Court.

Given the history of the case, the verdict is still unknown on requests. Many have criticized the decision taken by the government decision thus far and many are now asking if could Adeeb go free although thousand of evidence has been presented in his case. While Adeeb remains under house arrest due to his medical condition multiple inmates are facing similar medical conditions. However, these inmates were not granted house arrest.
