Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has arrived in the Maldives for an official two-day visit, with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu welcoming him at Velana International Airport.

PM Anwar's visit, scheduled for September 14–15, comes at the invitation of President Dr. Muizzu.

The invitation was extended during President Dr. Muizzu's official visit to Malaysia in April 2025.

This marks Anwar's first visit to the Maldives since becoming Malaysia's prime minister in November 2022.

Following his arrival, PM Anwar was received by President Dr. Muizzu at the airport, where schoolchildren also performed a cultural presentation as part of the welcoming arrangements.

A formal reception ceremony is scheduled to take place Tuesday morning.

The Malaysian prime minister is expected to hold official discussions with President Dr. Muizzu during the visit.

The talks will cover bilateral relations, cooperation in international forums and opportunities to expand collaboration across various sectors.

The two leaders are also expected to witness the signing of several memoranda of understanding covering key areas of cooperation, as the two countries seek to further strengthen their longstanding relationship.

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla and Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam are separately scheduled to pay courtesy calls on the visiting Malaysian prime minister.

The Maldives and Malaysia have maintained diplomatic relations for 58 years, with ties developing through people-to-people connections, high-level official exchanges and cooperation in multiple areas of mutual interest.

PM Anwar's visit is expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to build on these longstanding relations and identify new areas for closer cooperation.
