Maldives and Malaysia have agreed to begin discussions on establishing a trade agreement aimed at strengthening economic relations between the two countries.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu made the announcement following official talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during his visit to the Maldives.

President Dr. Muizzu said the discussions covered ways to deepen the longstanding relationship between the two countries, strengthen existing areas of cooperation and identify new sectors for collaboration.

The president described PM Anwar's visit as a reflection of the close ties and mutual respect between the Maldives and Malaysia.

He also highlighted Malaysia's longstanding contribution to developing Maldivian human resources, particularly through support for higher education.

President Dr. Muizzu said agreements reached during the visit would create additional opportunities for bilateral cooperation.

Discussions also focused on expanding visa services, increasing scholarship opportunities and pursuing joint research initiatives.

The two sides also discussed measures to address challenges faced by Maldivians living in Malaysia and those traveling there for medical treatment.

Tourism was another area of discussion, with the two countries exploring opportunities related to halal tourism as well as cultural and religious tourism to encourage greater travel between the two destinations.

On economic cooperation, President Dr. Muizzu said the proposed trade agreement would help further strengthen commercial ties.

He also encouraged Malaysian companies and investors to explore opportunities in the Maldives, particularly in renewable energy, digital infrastructure, construction and Islamic finance.

The two countries also agreed to maintain cooperation in international forums.

President Dr. Muizzu said the Maldives and Malaysia would continue coordinating efforts to support Palestinian rights and advance the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

The latest commitments build on decades of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Malaysia and are expected to expand cooperation across trade, investment, education, tourism and other sectors.
