Malaysia has agreed in principle to extend a USD 100 million financial facility to the Maldives following a request from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the decision during a press statement following official talks with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

PM Anwar said President Dr. Muizzu had contacted him regarding the MMA's request for assistance from Malaysia's central bank, Bank Negara Malaysia.

He confirmed that Malaysia had agreed to support the request, with the two central banks expected to work on the mechanism and implementation process.

 

The two leaders also agreed to convene a Maldives-Malaysia Joint Commission meeting in Kuala Lumpur before the end of the year.

Their discussions covered several other areas, including resolving visa-related difficulties faced by parents of Maldivian students studying in Malaysia and expanding cooperation in healthcare.

PM Anwar also said Malaysia would explore a proposal for PETRONAS to assess potential opportunities for oil and mineral exploration in the Maldives, with the matter to be discussed with the Malaysian state-owned energy company.

The Malaysian prime minister also highlighted the two countries' shared position on the Palestinian cause and praised President Dr. Muizzu's advocacy for Palestinian rights.

During the visit, Anwar received a ceremonial welcome at Republic Square in Malé before holding official talks with President Dr. Muizzu at the President's Office.

The two leaders also witnessed the exchange of memoranda of understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation in defense and Islamic affairs.
