Nasheed: The President does not play a role in modifying the form of government.
Speaker of the Parliament and Former President Nasheed has stated the President does not play any significant role in the opinion vote in changing the system of government.
Before the debate on a motion moved by Democratic lawmaker Ilyas Labeeb calling for an invisible vote of the people to change the system of governance in the Maldives. Speaker Nasheed highlighted that parliament needs to seek public opinion on matters and it is important to seek public opinion under Article 78 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives. He explained that Parliament first need to pass this motion first.
Nasheed stated that if parliament approves the particular motion it would be best to follow the procedure and approach set by the election commission to seek a vote from the public.
To all lawmakers, we must do so by the constitution
Said Nasheed
About this, Nasheed stated that he would continue today's session without concluding until the debate on the resolution is concluded and taken to a vote.
Ilyas's resolution had earlier included taking the invisible vote before October 30. However, when it was tabled today, it was amended to include a systemic vote by October 30.
