The name of the political party formed under the leadership of the Parliament's Speaker and leader of MDP, Mohamed Nasheed, has been announced.

Members of Fikuregge Dhirun party submitted a form to Elections Commission today, requesting approval for the formation of a new political party.

Whilst speaking to the media afterwards, the spokesperson for Fikuregge Dhirun and Local Government Authority’s former CEO Afshan, stated that the newly formed party is to be called "The Democrats".

Speaking about the party’s name Afshan further stated that the party was created to establish the rules and principles of democracy. And that the name was also decided under these rules after consultation with a large number of people.

In addition, Afshan stated that everything about the party will be conducted according to the party’s name, under the rules and principles of democracy. And that the party will work towards the prosperity of the citizens economically.

Last Wednesday members of the government's main ruling party, MDP had resigned from the party stating that the MDP was now being run against the foundations of the party and announced the formation of the new party. Following this they asked the public's opinion about the name for the new party.

The democrats have also announced their decision to run in the upcoming presidential elections.
